Insights and highlights from our Design and Deliver teams

FEATURE 1

The Forge & Fern, Staple Hill — our most sustainable project to date

This project was both the development of the former Red Lion pub to a Café, Bar & Restaurant, and, a new build project creating a block of apartments; with the complexities of both.

The build has spearheaded the regeneration of Staple Hill and the surrounding areas, accelerating the growing popularity of East Bristol. This is now an entirely carbon neutral site, being all-electric and partly powered by solar panels.

With beehives on the roof the build promotes as much sustainable onsite production as possible. The living wall brings with it its own eco-system, promoting biodiversity. The home-grown herb garden means the kitchen has access to the freshest produce, and the botanicals for the gin made in the cellar distillery.

Where possible, materials were salvaged, repurposed, recycled or reused. When part of the building was demolished, the pennant stones were used in the building of the new two-storey extension; each stone painstakingly hand cut and re-used to create new walls that replicated those of the previous pub.

FEATURE 2

Whole house restoration project on Great Pulteney Street, Bath

76 Great Pulteney Street is an exquisite Grade 1 listed townhouse sat on this historic and world-renowned street.

Our build team have sympathetically restored this building from several apartments back to a grand home, restoring the wealth of period charm throughout the building including sash windows, marble fireplaces and opulent cornicing across six floors.

This property consists of six bedrooms, a vaulted wine-cellar, roof terrace, garage, and views across to Bath Rugby’s Recreation Ground from every room at the rear of the property. This project was 10 months long across nearly 8,000 square foot involving over forty tradesmen and women. We thank our team for their hard work and superior craftsmanship, for our interiors team for presenting this project beautifully and to a long list of suppliers, partners, and service providers for getting this project off the ground and completed.

FEATURE 3

Whole house restoration project on The Circus in Bath.

We’re delighted to share some close-up shots from our whole house restoration project on The Circus in Bath.

Having erected a scaffold to survey the stonework, this has provided an amazing platform to photograph the front and rear elevations.

Up close, the intricacy of the design becomes even more apparent, along with the truly mind-blowing skill of the masons, with each section carved by hand from solid ashlar stone in the 1700’s, without access to electricity or modern tools!

As a historic factoid, by placing acorns along the top of the Circus, John Wood, the Architect, was making references to the legend of the founding of Bath following Bladud’s discovery of the healing hot waters; his leprous pigs were cured when they discovered the hot spring while foraging for acorns. The acorn also references Wood’s fascination with the Druids, who were the ‘Princes of the Hollow Oak’.

FEATURE 5

Clifton townhouse
complete refresh

This year has seen the design and build teams busy with multiple projects across the south west – but the star of 2019 has got to be our Clifton townhouse on Gloucester Row.

An impressive and iconic home at one of Bristol’s most prestigious addresses – we took on the extensive refurbishment with a clear vision, bringing this beautiful building back to life and creating a happy home for generations to come. The journey was quite eventful, with leaks to resolve and many special period features needing expert TLC.

The now stunning property is configured with 6 double bedrooms, two separate bathrooms and two en-suites. The grand master suite features a dressing room and large bathroom with ‘his and hers’ shower and sink units. Other highlights include a cinema room, wine cellar, two stunning reception rooms and a 77ft south-facing garden.

The whole team are incredibly proud of the project and the specialist experience we’ve gained – we’re now looking forward to tackling new challenges in the year to come.
